Over 1000 children from eight of the city’s East End schools will be celebrating the Zulu culture at an afternoon of song and dance at the Lightfoot Sports Centre this week.
The pupils from St Anthony’s, Tyneview, West Walker, Welbeck, Walker Technology College, Sir Charles Parsons and Wharrier Street Primary will join the Lions of Zululand tomorrow, Wednesday, 12 July at 1.30pm.
Each school has been learning about the Zulu culture through dance ,song and other workshops from the Lions of Zululand who have visited the Walker schools this term.
During tomorrow’s celebration the pupils, teachers and their helpers will be watching the Lions of Zululand perform a number of dances in an explosion of entertainment and education.
The workshops have given the children from the Walker area of Newcastle the opportunity to learn about a different culture with fun and enjoyment.
Tomorrow’s celebration will be filmed by 10 children from 10 to 13 years old who have been visiting the City Learning Centre to learn how to become film makers.
Their skills including editing by using state of the art technology will be put to the test when the children produce a DVD of tomorrow’s presentation.
Pupils from West Walker School have also designed programmes for the Lions of Zululand performance using computer graphics and have used the theme of “Out of Africa”.
The workshops and tomorrow’s presentation have been organised by East Newcastle Education Action Zone.
Director of the EAZ, David Atkinson said: “Tomorrow’s colourful presentation will be a wonderful conclusion to an exciting learning experience our pupils and staff have all enjoyed.
“I would like to thank the Lions of Zululand for giving some of our city’s young people the opportunity to learn about other people, their customs and cultures.”
