CS2.13 Newcastle East Asylum Seekers Support Project
The East End Asylum Seekers Project aims to promote the integration of asylum seekers into community life to combat isolation and increase life opportunities. This process is undertaken by challenging inequalities in health and bringing stability to the community by breaking down barriers and promoting diverse cultures.
The support project tackles these issues by:
- Liaising with healthcare professionals (e.g. GPs, Primary Care Trust, Community Action on Health, HealthWORKS)
- Developing access to existing and other support services
- Co-ordinating partnerships to address health concerns
- Working with volunteers to develop a befriending scheme
- Developing social activities and community events to raise awareness
- Developing support services in local churches
- Integrating asylum seekers in local tenants and residents associations
- Developing asylum seeker community groups
- Working with schools and youth groups
