Primary school children have created a sculptural winter wonderland to lift people’s spirits and dispel the winter gloom.

Children from Canning Street Primary School wanted to create a magical experience of their own after being inspired by wintry novels such as the Wolves of Willoughby Chase, the Narnia series and The Polar Express, so they set about creating a series of illuminated artworks to bring an enchanted atmosphere to the school on Wellfield Road, Benwell.

Headteacher Heather Campbell said: “The children and staff have put so much work into creating the perfect magical winter wonderland, with artworks inside and outside the building, and the pieces they have created have given the whole school a lift.

“All the work is linked to the novels the children have been reading in class and it’s so much more than just a simple art project; they’ve created a setting for their own storytelling. It’s a source of inspiration through the long dark winter months.”

Each year group, including nursery children, took part in the project using a wide range of materials. Parents were delighted to see what their children had created, when the lights were switched on and the artworks finally unveiled.
