After missing out on becoming European Green Capital in 2014, Newcastle City Council has pledged to continue to build on its environmental successes by further work with local communities across the City.
The plan would continue to build on national recognition as the UK’s most sustainable city and will give local people the opportunity to lead and take part in activities to improve their neighbourhoods.
David Slater, the City Council’s Executive Director of Environment and Regeneration, said: "While we are all disappointed that we have not been shortlisted, we have had fantastic support from partners, under the leadership of Professor Paul Younger of Newcastle University. We have learned about the huge efforts by local people and businesses already being made, and it has made us ambitious to do even more in the years ahead. We may not be wearing the European green capital crown in 2014 but with our work across the region as part of Warm Up North to drive forward energy efficiency of homes, and decent neighbourhood standards to make sure every local area is as clean and green as it should be, we will be increasing our work to make the city greener."
