Newcastle's variety of shopping extends to a number of interesting markets and the variety throughout the City Centre is complemented by colourful street stalls on almost every corner.
The Grainger Market is the City's largest traditional market, situated in an elegant, classically styled building in Grainger Street near Grey's Monument. This under-cover market was the largest in Europe when first built in the 1830's. It sells mainly meat and vegetables with a good variety of game available. There are many other stalls, each with its own particular character. Hidden within is the unique "Marks and Spencer Original Penny Bazaar", the world's smallest Marks and Spencer store.
The Grainger Market also holds an Arts and Crafts fair on the second Saturday of each month.
The Marks and Spencer Original Penny Bazaar in the Grainger Market is the last surviving example of the shops that gave birth to a legend in retailing. It was Michael Marks who opened the first Penny Bazaar in the Kirkgate open air market in Leeds in 1834, with the motto "Don't ask the price - it's a penny!" It was hailed as a revolution, providing high quality goods at affordable prices to all.
The Green Market is now located at High Friars in Eldon Square. Entrances are on the High Friars mall level between MK and New Look and on Nelson Street next to Cafe Royal.
The new Quayside Market is a vibrant and varied showcase for quality crafts, goods and produce. Unearth hidden gems from local artists, designers and jewellers. Feast your eyes on a wonderful array of food producers and fashionistas. Be entertained by singers, dancers and performers. Open 9.30am - 2.30pm.
Also on Sunday the Armstrong Bridge Arts Market is held on the bridge over Jesmond Dene from 10.00 am - 4.00 pm. (weather permitting).
A Farmers Market is held in Newcastle on the first Friday of each month at Grey's Monument. This market is a showcase for the very best in Northumbrian produce.
There are also many one-off markets held throughout the year; it's best to check for details on our events database Cityeye.
