The Lord Mayor's Design Awards happens every two years and aims to encourage, promote and publicise the very best in architecture and environmental design and to help improve the built environment for us all. This year a new category, "The People's Choice" was opened to the public vote to support your views and help us celebrate excellent design in Newcastle upon Tyne. All nominees for "The People's Choice" were already shortlisted for one of the Lord Mayor's Design Awards in categories such as Landscape, Small Scale Development, Conservation, Refurbishment, New Building and Sustainability.
Voting closed with 1582 votes cast.
Ellison Quad, Northumbria City Campus
The external works consist of the re-design and construction of the Ellison Quad which was then only accessed from Northumberland Road and the surrounding Ellison Buildings. The proposals were designed to provide a direct pedestrian route from Northumberland Road through to the East Development via the (then) proposed Intersite Bridge which extends over the A1(M) and Nexus Line.
City Library
Footfall through Princess Square was needed to improve the profile of the library. The aim was to make the landscape/townscape improvements work to improve the profile, attractiveness and usage of the library. The spatial concept plan for the scheme recognises three distinct uses in the square: an entrance aligned with Northumberland Place; a useable space for the library that is adjacent to a permeable side of the building; and a retail/non library moving and milling space.
Enslin Street, Walker
The primary purpose of this scheme was to develop an existing green space into a high profile ‘pocket park’ for the benefit of the local community. There was a strong desire that the final design should reflect the heavy industrial heritage of Walker, mainly ship building, which although gone was still very prominent in the memory of local residents.
St Oswald’s Hospice Day Services
The aim of the development was to ensure the privacy, confidentiality and dignity of patients. The building was required to create spacious airy environments, provide additional and more suitable office space, shield the domestic scale hospice from the Northern Rock office development and retain protected trees on the site. The core outcome of the building was to improve the quality of life for patients.
High Heaton Library
The library is a key facility at the heart of a suburb and sits at the foot of a landmark high rise residential block. The design encourages a relaxed atmosphere where people feel comfortable and at home. Feedback from residents, library customers and ward members had a significant influence on the design.
High Level Bridge
An inspection and assessment by Consultant Mott MacDonald found many elements of the bridge in need of repair and strengthening. Everything was designed to accord with accepted heritage engineering principles and most solutions were subject to Listed Building Consent. A modern high performance paint system was specified for the bridge and a beige grey colour was chosen by the Conservation Officers to match the masonry.
St Michael and All Angels Church, Newburn
Following a fire there was extensive damage within the church. The design approach included maximizing the retention of original material, minimizing interventions, recording and conservative repair matching materials/details. The new interventions were to be reversible and of the highest contemporary standard.
Tyneside Cinema
This is an extensive refurbishment and conservation programme including a roof extension, education and editing suites, meeting rooms and digital cinema technology for training. The cinema is now fully accessible with adaptation of floor levels and digital technology to assist the deaf and blind
Eldon Square North
This project encompasses the reconfiguration and extension of the North block of Eldon Square Shopping Centre to create a new bus station and shopping mall as well as the reinvigoration of Eldon Square by forming new restaurants and cafes combined with civic and landscaping improvements to the public space.
Great North Museum
The refurbishment included the re-use and revival of a Grade ll* listed building. The 20th Century internal alterations were removed and new floor plates were introduced.
Cooper’s Studio
The building is in the Central Conservation Area and over the line of Hadrian’s Wall. An application was made to demolish the building. English Heritage established it had national significance as a rare surviving city centre livery stables and the building was listed. The application for demolition was then withdrawn and the building was refurbished.
Staybridge Suites
The building is on the prominent corner of Melbourne Street and Buxton Street, and is built over a fragment of Hadrian’s Wall. The building was specifically designed for the Intercontinental Hotel Group.
Excelsior Academy
This is one of the largest academy projects in the country to date. Academies are all-ability, state funded schools established and managed by sponsors from a wide range of backgrounds. The site had previously been cleared of housing by NCC and the land falls from north to south by 30m.
City Library
The essence of the brief was to provide a building to ‘delight and inspire’. The design proposals were developed through public, staff and user consultation.
Time Central
As the first substantial urban intervention within the Gallowgate office quarter Time Central introduces a new urban language, based upon the principles adopted by John Dobson, which will be interpreted throughout the subsequent phases of the Gallowgate Quarter. The urban concept behind the design of the development interacts with the immediate urban environment and in particular reinforces the medieval sweep of Gallowgate with the curved primary elevation.
Riversgate, Walker
The brief was to provide a mixed, blind tenure development of predominantly family housing with some apartments and a small retail unit. The site slopes approximately 5.5m from the northern boundary of Walker Road to the south boundary edge which is defined by the steep embankment which slopes towards the River Tyne. The site was predominantly cleared brownfield that had grassed over. Existing properties fronting Walker Road were cleared. The development achieved an ecohomes excellent rating. The materials used were chosen for their low environmental impact. The timber frame construction allowed for high levels of insulation.
