Abuba Karr Barrie from Walkergate has been involved with the Walker Challenge since 2005. He has taken part in activities from canoeing and archery, to fencing and pin-hole photography. He says the group is like a family; they have given him help and support to find work as an Oxfam volunteer, which he really enjoys. Walker Challenge offers lots of opportunities to people using mental health services in the east end of Newcastle. Over the past eighteen years, over 300 people have had the chance to try out new activities such as climbing, canoeing, abseiling, mountain biking, horse riding, caving and gliding. Walker Challenge tries to help them to work towards physical and mental wellbeing.
The group recently put together an exhibition of their art work which included a video art installation, a display of pin-hole photography, as well as the spectacular outdoor “Dragon’s Walk” creation at Harbottle in Northumberland. You can see the art work and buy prints from http://www.mobexnortheast.org.uk/. All proceeds go directly into work with young and disadvantaged people from the North East.
