The Arboricultural Team assists in the promotion and provision of a range of operational and technical support services relating to the development of the Council’s Tree Strategy, relating to problems, protection, removal, maintenance and care, of Council owned trees and hedgerows.

The section is also committed to partnership working with outside agencies both in the public and private sectors.

Responsibilities include:

  • Tree surveys and inspections
  • Implementing planned tree maintenance
  • Providing advice to Neighbourhood Services, client departments, external agencies and the public
  • Establishing and maintaining an electronic inventory of all city owned trees
  • Providing technical site assistance for operational staff
  • Providing written documentation relating to trees and tree matters
  • Operational work to all amenity trees and significant mature hedges within Newcastle 96% of the tree teams arboreal waste is now recycled in a number of ways
  • Use of Bark on shrub borders and countryside paths
  • Charcoal production
  • Wood sculptures
  • Fire wood production

Tree Maintenance

Trees can become damaged in strong winds, or may require attention as a result of age, disease or size, and the team will carry out remedial work on Council owned trees. General tree enquiries will be inspected within 28 days. Please note it is not possible for the team to carry out work on trees on private land, you will need to contact a private contractor to carry out this work. If a tree is dangerous we will respond to make safe within 3 hours,  24 hours a day, 7 days per week, 365 days of the year.
