Around 100 commemorative plaques have been erected since the 1970's to mark Newcastle's historic buildings and its connections with a number of eminent historic figures such as George and Robert Stephenson, Portuguese diplomat and novelist, Jose Maria de eca de Querios and Russian born writer Yevgeni Zamyatin whose masterpiece 'We' was apparently a major influence on George Orwell's '1984'.
