What is Workstep?

Workstep is a service run by the Work Step Team, part of Newcastle City Council. We help people with disabilities or long-term health problems to find and stay in paid employment.

We have been running Workstep and similar programmes for over 17 years and currently help 54 people to work.

We aim to help people:

  • think about what kind of work they can do; and
  • do their job without extra support.

How it works

  • Jackie had an accident ten years ago that left her with a physical disability.
  • After several years out of work Jackie talked to WorkFirst.
  • We worked with Jackie on a personal development plan so she could work without extra support.
  • Jackie received training and personal support. She started working as an administration assistant.
  • WorkFirst helped Jackie and her employer to look at and fund workplace adaptations that Jackie needed.
  • A job coach helped Jackie for two months and eventually Jackie no longer needed their help.
  • Jackie now works independently for her employer.
