Housing and Employment Compacts

Welcome to the Prevention Network. This Network is a group of agencies who are committed to working together to prevent and reduce homelessness in Newcastle.

This network is important because it will help you to help your client to get accommodation - and a lack of accommodation makes it much harder for your work with your clients to be successful.

Who can this help?

At least 4000 people a year risk losing their accommodation or being excluded from the accommodation we all take for granted. This includes people who are:

  • In absolute crisis e.g. fleeing harassment, domestic violence
  • Moving back to independence e.g. leaving prison, hospital, rehab, family home
  • At risk of losing their home e.g. the people who have been through the above and those engage with statutory services

Why this matters to Newcastle

The housing market in Newcastle has fundamentally changed since 2000. There is no longer a surplus in housing:

  • There are 5000 fewer units of Council housing
  • There are 3000+ more students
  • House prices and rents have increased

This means we have to:

  • Identify those at risk of losing their accommodation or who need accommodation
  • Plan to meet accommodation needs at the same time as providing support to help people to keep their accommodation

The Prevention Network gives you access to the resources you need to get and keep accommodation
