Up-to-date homeless statistics are readily available as the Department for Communities and Local Government (formerly ODPM) publishes homeless data on a quarterly basis. This is due to the local authority completing a quarterly 'P1E' return, detailing the households dealt with under the homelessness provisions of the 1985 and 1996 Housing Act and the Homelessness Act 2002.

The Newcastle Homeless Liaison Project also collect statistics on homeless people looking for accommodation and the people who move through homeless and supported accommodation within the city. We collect data for every person discharged from homeless supported accommodation within the city this includes: local authority temporary accommodation, women's refuges, emergency access hostels and longer term supported accommodation (non emergency access). This data is then used to identify the support needs and demographics of homeless people within the city and identify gaps in provision.
