About the Holocaust

Holocaust Memorial Day exists so that we can learn the lessons of the past to build a better future now. The central theme this year was ’Imagine…remember, reflect, react’.

Events took place in Newcastle with the aim of ensuring that we continue to remember the victims of the Holocaust and other acts of genocide and think about how we live together today.

This year’s Commemorative Event included a concert performance of the children’s opera ‘Brundibar’, first performed in the Terezin concentration camp during World War Two. Young musicians and schoolchildren from across the city took part in this performance, led by Newcastle and Gateshead Councils’ Schools Music Teams. The performance was followed by a number of short pieces, including a reflection from local schoolchildren who had visited Auschwitz as part of the Government programme and an anti-bullying drama.

About the Holocaust

During the Second World War, Nazi Germany murdered six million Jews in a systematic, state-sponsored campaign of persecution and extermination now known as the Holocaust. Although Jews were the primary victims of Nazi racism, others targeted for death included tens of thousands of Roma (Gypsies) and at least 200,000 mentally or physically disabled people.

As Nazi tyranny spread across Europe millions of people were persecuted and murdered on the basis of skin colour, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religious belief or political affiliation. The consequences of this loss and persecution are felt today by Holocaust and genocide survivors, their children and grandchildren in the UK and around the world.

Newcastle was the focal point for the UK's 2007 Holocaust Memorial Day programme. Click here to visit the archived the website for the 2007 event. The site includes information about the 2007 event and has a schools resources section titled "Same. But Different".
