The Grainger Market remains a busy centre for its traditional
products; fresh meat, fruit and vegetables.
There are over 250 shops and stalls, many held by the same families for more
than a century. The market also houses the smallest and oldest surviving branch
of Marks & Spencer's; the Penny Bazaar which opened in 1895.
The Grade I listed building also houses a unique working Weigh House - once a
requirement of all markets to enable traders and their customers to check the
weight of purchases, now most often used to weigh customers!
