1. Of the 249 buildings in Grainger Town, half are listed and 30% of these are Grade I or II* ( Only 6% of the rest of Britain's listed buildings are Grade I or II*)

2. Richard Grainger rebuilt Newcastle transforming the medieval townscape -in only six years. Those who opposed the demolition of the buildings were undone by the speed of his actions -he began demolition of one within three hours of his purchase.

3. Today, after extensive repair and stone cleaning it is easy to see why Grainger it was called a "City of Palaces" after its completion in 1842.

4. Prime Minister William Gladstone described Grey St as Britain's "Best modern street" on a visit to Newcastle in 1862.

5. Grey's Monument is 135ft high, just shorter than Nelsons Column in London.

6. Edward Hodges Baily sculptured Earl Grey's statue on the Monument and also Lord Nelson's in London.

7. In 1239 the religious order of Dominican Friars or "Black Friars" as they became known because of their black mantle and cowl, established the monastery at Blackfriars.

8. Since 1774, Grainger Town's Assembly Rooms on Fenkle St have played host to distinguished visitors such as Strauss, Liszt, Charles Dickens, The Duke of Wellington, Edward VII, George V, George and Robert Stephenson.

9. Both the huge Theatre Royal and the vast Grainger Market were each built in less than 12 months.

10. Since 1997 The Grainger Town Project has attracted over £54 Million of private sector investment, for the regeneration of the area.
