Grainger Town Video Project
Welcome to Grainger Town

Graingertown . M.Reed
In the 1980's and early 1990's, this once prosperous area of the city fell into decline. New centres of retail and commercial activity eroded it's economic base and left properties to fall into disrepair. As more and more floorspace was unoccupied, the residential population fell.

The Grainger Town Project was established in 1997 as a partnership between Newcastle City Council, English Partnerships and English Heritage ; the aim was to reverse the decline of this once prosperous area. A £120 million regeneration programme is well underway and will continue until 2003.

The Grainger Town Video project is a permanent record of those physical changes made through the regeneration process, but importantly, will also capture the reactions of the people who work or live in the area, filmed by volunteers from the very same community.
