Citylife Magazine July / August 2009 Edition

Not only have we had the opening of the fabulous Great North Museum, but now we have a brand new state-of-the-art library. City Library opened its doors on 7 June. The building is very impressive with great views of the city. There is a lovely new café, loads of new books, CDs, DVDs, and talking books. My favourite bit is the new machine that automatically sorts your books when you bring them back.

Citylife Magazine April / May 2009 Edition

We’ve waited three years and at last the Great North Museum: Hancock opens its doors in May. The Hancock was always a fun and interesting place to visit. But now there are even more things to see including a life-size replica T. rex dinosaur. And what’s more, it is free to get in.

If you are aged 50 or over then you should take a look at our Active Ageing programme. There is something to suit all tastes from gentle guided strolls around the city, to IT courses and even Egyptian dance classes. Make 2009 your year to try something new.

In the last issue of Citylife we asked you to give us your views on the council’s spending plans in our budget survey. Well, lots of you did and our mailbags were full of your comments and suggestions. This time we are asking what you think about this magazine. We want to know what you like (and what you don’t like) about Citylife, and what you find useful about the magazine.

Citylife Magazine January / February 2009 Edition

We begin the year with a new editor for Citylife. I am Nadine Aston and I joined the team at the end of 2008. I hope you enjoy our first edition for 2009.

The evenings are still dark and the weather gloomy, but the Newcastle Gateshead Comedy Festival is here to lift our spirits. The festival runs from 2 to 8 March with a host of star names to keep our minds off the financial pinch. As the credit crunch continues it is more important than ever to make sure that you are claiming all the money you are entitled to. We let you know how you can check that you’re claiming all your benefits.

At the moment we’re preparing the council spending plans for 2009 to 2010 and we want to know what you think. We want to make sure that our plans are in line with your views on Council Tax levels and how the money should be spent.

There are important changes to parking in Newcastle this year. We will be taking over parking enforcement from the police; but don’t worry, if you park correctly in the city, you won’t see a difference. And finally, as a dedicated knitter, I was delighted to hear about the knitting exhibition that will be touring the region. 40 Newcastle women have been knitting the stories of their lives and I hope you’ll agree they are an inspiration!

Citylife Magazine November / December 2008 Edition

Here we are again in the run up to the festive season and there’s a lot to see and do for everyone. Children and young people shouldn’t miss the Northern Children’s Book Festival. At the gala day on 22 November they will have the chance to meet some of their favourite authors.

Our Christmas and New Year Special gives you a flavour of what's happening over the festive period, including useful information on our opening times.

As usual we try to keep you up to date with what we are doing to improve your services. This time, you can read about two new customer service centres and some of our new schools. And read our annual report to find what we have spent money on and how we performed over the last year. Whatever you do, don’t miss our cover stars, the Hairy Bikers, switching on the Christmas lights. The ceremony takes place at Grey Street on Thursday, 20 November.

Citylife Magazine September / October 2008 Edition

Now that autumn is creeping up on us we’ve tried to give you lots of information about how to stay healthy and keep active. And if your children are keen, there’s still time for them to enter the Mini or Junior North Run on 3 October. As a cyclist, I will be heading to the quayside on 12 September to see our top cyclists cross the Tyne in the Tour of Britain cycle ride.

You can find out how to visit some of our city’s cultural treasures for free during the Heritage Open Days. Take the chance while you can – some of these places are only open for this one week in the year.

On a more serious note – every year we do a survey of Newcastle residents to find out what you think of our services. In this issue, you can read what people said last year. We’ll be sending this year’s survey out in September and October so if you get one through your letterbox I hope you can find the time to fill it in.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Citylife

We are really pleased to tell you about our new Citylife podcast. You can listen on-line or download our podcast to your mp3 player. Let us know what you think by emailing citylife@newcastle.gov.uk. I just want to say a huge welcome to Anna Foster from Metro Radio who has kindly agreed to find time in her hectic “rock ‘n’ roll” life to have a bit of a gossip with us. On a more serious note - do you know your local councillor? Find out who they are and how to contact them by going to www.newcastle.gov.uk/councillors And meet our new Lord Mayor and hear about his sporting challenge. Before I go, I would just like to congratulate Jane Bell who features on our front cover. She works for us and has just won Apprentice of the Year –what a star! Well, have a smashing summer and the Citylife team will look forward to speaking to you in September.

<itunes:subtitle>In this issue, you can read about World Environment Day taking place on 5 June and how you can show your support and really make a difference. The EAT! festival is back in NewcasteGateshead offering exciting opportunities to experience unique and exciting food – how yummy!
Why not sit down and have a cuppa and read our features about the hard working volunteers at Newcastle Citizens Advice Bureau and the Recruited to Recycle feature. In our next edition watch out for the launch of a new regular feature as we team up with Anna Foster from Metro Radio’s “Tony Horne In The Morning”. Anna and I will be checking out “what’s new” in the city and reviewing new restaurants, bars, family attractions and much more – plus giveaways and celebrity gossip.</itunes:subtitle>
