We manage energy in a portfolio of over 500 buildings owned and/or occupied by Newcastle City Council and its partner agencies. Buildings on our portfolio can access energy saving funds.
We have an 'Invest to Save' fund for energy saving projects in Newcastle City Council's buildings. This uses funding available from the Carbon Trust.
By financing projects through energy saving loans, the energy savings from projects are recycled into a self-sustaining fund. The initial capital loan to each project is repaid using the energy savings made from the installation of the measure. Once the initial capital loan has been repaid, the loan recipient continues to benefit from the ongoing energy savings.
To ensure the cost effectiveness of the fund, it will only be applied to energy saving technologies which have been economically proven and have relatively short payback periods (less than 5 years); for example, insulation projects, building energy management systems, heating, ventilation and air-con (HVAC) installation and replacement and high efficiency lighting and lighting controls.
