Family Learning gives you the chance to learn new skills and help your child to learn in a fun and friendly way. Opportunities are open to parents, grandparents, guardians and carers and we would particularly welcome fathers to join us on our programmes.
Learn how to help your child learn and you will be learning too! We offer a whole range of programmes in schools, libraries, community centres and other community venues in Newcastle.
Family Learning Workshops and Introductory Sessions (2-3 hours)
Offering opportunities for learners to try new activities and develop new skills:
• Family Crafts/Story Sacks/ healthy eating/ Family Spanish or French/ ICT all offer mini versions of longer courses
• Family Literacy or numeracy workshops are mini versions of It’s Only Words or Count on Me programmes.
Family Learning Introductory Courses (9-12 hours over 3-6 weeks)
In a range of subjects including:
• Play and language
• Keeping up with the children
• Supporting bilingual parents
• Family crafts
• ICT
• Healthy eating
• Story Sacks
• Game Making
• Family French or Spanish
• Family football
Family Literacy and Numeracy Courses
These programmes aim to raise standards of literacy and numeracy for both children and parents.
Count on Me (30 and 60 hours)
On our 30 and 60 hour courses you will work initially work with a tutor in the first part of the session to develop new ways to help support your child’s numeracy development. While you are doing this your child will work in a small group with the class teacher. During the second part of the session you and your child will work together on fun numeracy based activities.
It’s Only Words or Early Start (30 and 60 hours)
The structure of both these programmes is as described above. On our It’s Only Words course you will focus on literacy skills and in the Early Start course the emphasis is to enhance language development and interaction between parents/carers and their babies or young children.
