Advice and Support Workers (ASWs)

The ASW Team is based within Your Homes Newcastle and provides advice and support on debt and benefits.  Information on the ASWs are available here.

The Outreach Team of ASWs are based in the local community housing offices and offer a service to current and prospective council tennants. Tenants can make an appointment with their ASW by contacting their nearest community housing office.

Newcastle Welfare Rights Service provide independent and confidential advice, information, casework and representation on benefits and tax credits for individuals from ethnic minorities. Debt advice is also provided with referral to a specialist debt unit if necessary. Urdu, Punjabi and Bengali speaking staff are available. Interpreters of other languages can be arranged. Home visits available by arrangement.

Help is available for benefits advice, grant applications, financial issues, housing and employment. Advice provided by telephone and appointment as well as home and hospital visits. The Income Generator Team is formed by Newcastle Welfare Rights Service and the Benefits section of Newcastle City Council. They offer advice (do not represent at tribunals) on benefits and tax credits through drop in sessions held at the City Councils Customer Service Centres and at various community bases across the city. The Law Centre provides free specialist legal advice and representation for people on low incomes in areas of welfare benefits, housing, employment, immigration and asylum, discrimination law for people who feel they have been discriminated against on the basis of age, disability, race, religion/belief, sex, sexual orientation, human rights law and judicial review.  Interpreters available, please book in advance.  Home visits can be arranged.  Free training can be provided to community organisations and advice agencies. Second tier advice is also provided to other voluntary and statutory agencies.

Newcastle Welfare Rights Service (NWRS)

Newcastle Welfare Rights Service provide independent and confidential advice, information, casework and representation on benefits and tax credits. Debt advice is also available with access to a specialist debt unit if necessary. Home visits available by arrangement. You can be referred to NWRS by contacting your social worker, health worker or other professional who is working with you. NWRS also have direct access for those living in the Walker, Scotswood or Newbiggin Hall areas. More information on these services. The Pathways Team of Advice and Support Workers (ASWs) provide a 'move on ' service primarily to those people who are wishing to move ou t of supported accommodation and into independent living. They also offer a move on service for people who are currently in hospital and cannot return to their homes. This includes advice (do not represent at tribunals) on housing benefit queries, focusing on those whose first language is not English. The service works across the city and staff speak Sylheti as well as accessing face to face and telephone interpreters. The Mulit-lingual Service operates a drop in and appointment system plus home visits if you are unable to call into the service.
