Westerhope School Success
Special congratulations go to Knop Law Primary School following their success in last year's SATS. Department for Children Families and Schools figures show that every single pupil at the school reached the government's target in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, giving the school a perfect rating score of 300 out of 300. Head teacher Pauline Dutton said "We had excellent teachers, and we get great support from our governors and parents".

A New Children's Centre for Westerhope
A Children's Centre is currently being developed within the Westerhope area, where services from Health, City Council and the Voluntary and Community Sector are working together to improve support and information for children and families, with particular emphasis on families with children from pre birth to five years of age.
Children’s Centres include:

  • Childcare and early education support for pre-school, and before and after school childcare.
  • Information and support for parents and families, including training and jobs advice and information.
  • Child and family health services including baby massage, breast feeding support and general parenting support.

The Children's Centre services will not be available in one single building but will be delivered from a number of existing facilities within the Westerhope area. However, the Westerhope Community Association, Hillhead Road will undergo refurbishment as part of the development. Work should be completed by the end of March. If you would like more information about the Children's Centre development please contact:

Westerhope WheelThe Westerhope Wheel Project
Members of the Westerhope Village Residents Association are working with Councillors and Officers from Westerhope, Woolsington and Denton, to restore and reclaim a miners wheel originally from Ellington Colliery in Northumberland. The group, Westerhope Wheels in Action, has secured funding to acquire the wheel which is in safe storage in the City. The intention is to restore the wheel, inscribe 'Westerhope' around it, and install it on the roundabout at the junction of Stamfordham Road and West Denton Way. This will form an attractive feature at the entrance to the Ward. Alongside the renovation of the wheel an arts heritage project is being developed that brings the three Westerhope Primary Schools and the local history society, together with an artist to produce a modern day ‘Westerhope Miners Banner’. For more information contact your Ward Co-ordinator.

Holy Nativity Church, Chapel House
'Outside In' was launched in 2007 and aims to upgrade and refurbish the church to make it a versatile, accessible, welcoming and sustainable community resource for the next 30 – 40 years. The building of additional meeting space, kitchen, office, drop-in and other facilities will ensure the community has new space for a range of social, spiritual, recreational, creative and educational activities.
Phase 1 is in progress: the re-generation of the church.
Phase 2 is in the planning stage: this will include new facilities and additional meeting space.
The Church is working alongside Newcastle Primary Care (NHS) Trust, the local GP and Dental Practices, the Local Authority planning department and other potential partners towards the regeneration of the central amenities site in Chapel House. 'Outside In' is Holy Nativity Parish's contribution to the development plans and has the support of CHADCA, Knoplaw and Milecastle Primary Schools, the Councils of Denton, Newburn and Westerhope Wards, local Scout and Guide groups and a variety of other local residents groups.

'Outside In' Progress Report.
The Big Lottery Community Buildings Fund has awarded 'Outside In' a development grant to progress the project to the planning permission stage. An application for stage 2 of the grant (the capital grant from the building) will be submitted in August 2008. The Lottery decision will be made in February 2009. The doctors, dentists and Primary Care NHS Trust hope to announce in the next few weeks the appointment of a developer for the long awaited new health centre on Chapel House. The Church and the Surgeries will continue working together to ensure the best use of space and design of buildings for the community facilities needed. Local fund-raising and other efforts have raised the total for 'Outside In' to over £115,000. Continued local fund raising is extremely important as it demonstrated the involvement of the local community in the project. Please keep supporting us.

Local council services

Neighbourhood Services, one of the council's departments, is responsible for dealing with the cleanliness, safety and improvement of the local environment. The manager for Westerhope ward is Edward Bulloch.

The managers are in charge of the Neighbourhood Response Teams, whose job it is to respond quickly to problems that soon make a place look untidy or make it feel unsafe. This team includes the Rapid Response staff who sweep the streets, pick up litter and empty litter bins; remove small scale graffiti; make minor repairs to the footpath or street furniture; and cut back shrubs. They also deal with problems such as dead animals, blocked street drainspotholes and fly-tipping.

The Neighbourhood Response Managers make sure these teams are doing the jobs that are a priority for the local community. They work with local councillors, ward co-ordinators, tenants' and residents' groups and local people to find out what their priorities are. They work closely with other Neighbourhood Services teams in the area such as grounds maintenance, and road and pavement work.

If you want to contact your Neighbourhood Response Manager you can contact them directly, e-mail them or go along to a ward committee meeting.
