Finding the credit crunch tough? We could help
If you feel you’re having to tighten your belt and money isn’t going as far as it used to, our new ‘Income Generator’ team might be able to help. We have joined up two parts of the council – the Benefits Section and Welfare Rights – to create recession-busting help for anyone in the city.
The team can help you by looking at what benefits you may not even realise you’re entitled to which could save you pounds on council tax, rent or other areas of your budget.
For more information please phone our specially trained advisors, Claire Toleman, Welfare Rights Officer on 07976 507 471 or Peter Scott, Revenues and Benefits Operational Support Officer on 07500 224 928 or email them on claire.toleman@newcastle.gov.uk or lisa.meadows@newcastle.gov.uk

Surplus school sites in the Outer West - Land use consultation feedback
In October 2008 we hand-delivered a short questionnaire to over 4,000 households in the Chapel House and Chapel Park areas in order to find out residents' views on the possible future use and development of three surplus school sites, comprising

  1. Part of the former Chapel House Middle / Thomas Bewick Schools;
  2. Former Chapel Park Middle School; and
  3. Former Parkway Special School.

The questionnaire asked residents what they thought would be the best uses for these three sites. 1,638 responses were received. This excellent rate of return means that the results are a good representation of the views of the community as a whole. We would like to thank all those who took the time to fill in the questionnaire. Your comments will be very helpful in drawing up policies for these sites in the future. A newsletter has been distributed to inform residents of the main findings of the research and what we plan to do next.

Local Council Services

Neighbourhood Services, one of the council's departments, is responsible for dealing with the cleanliness, safety and improvement of the local environment. The manager for Denton ward is Edward Bulloch.

The managers are in charge of the Neighbourhood Response Teams, whose job it is to respond quickly to problems that soon make a place look untidy or make it feel unsafe. This team includes the Rapid Response staff who sweep the streets, pick up litter and empty litter bins; remove small scale graffiti; make minor repairs to the footpath or street furniture; and cut back shrubs . They also deal with problems such as dead animals, blocked street drainspotholes and fly-tipping.

The Neighbourhood Response Managers make sure these teams are doing the jobs that are a priority for the local community. They work with local councillors, ward co-ordinators, tenants' and residents' groups and local people to find out what their priorities are. They work closely with other Neighbourhood Services teams in the area such as grounds maintenance, and road and pavement work.

If you want to contact your Neighbourhood Response Manager you can contact them directly, e-mail them or go along to a ward committee meeting.
