Newsletter (pdf, 1Mb)
Fortnightly meetings are held between the College, Council officers and Morrisons representatives where any problems or issues are raised and addressed. Whilst it is inevitable that some disruption to normal services is only to be expected, all parties are striving to keep this to a minimum. The old Presto store, Kwik Save, the Whin Dyke public house, and the former petrol filling station have all been demolished. This has enabled site preparation works to proceed for the new development. Work has also commenced to prepare the land to the south of the Customer Service Centre (CSS) for the new hot food takeaway units. A draft timeline demonstrating some of the critical aspects of the development includes:
2008
May
- Complete highway works associated with Western access road following completion of NEDL works
July
- Complete refurbishment of existing Northern shopping mall
September
- Complete hot food takeaway units
- Complete health centre / new retail block; demolish old health centre
October
- Start Morrisons superstore
2009
Summer
- Complete Morrisons superstore

Fusion is a two-year, City Council-led scheme that, through a mixed programme of free-use, coached activities, innovation and outreach work, aims to increase participation in physical activity amongst children, young people and family groups across Newcastle.
The citywide project aims to achieve:
Increased physical activity participation in Newcastle.
A significant increase in young people participating in physical activity.
Development of programmes with the input from a young people's forum.
Better links between Newcastle City Council’s Leisure Services and sporting and voluntary organisations.
This will be achieved by:
A programme of free use alongside 'paid for' sessions in the City Council's activity centres, in parks and open spaces and in community centres.
Offering outreach programmes of activity in wards where there are no managed facilities.
Working more closely with schools and offering them opportunities to use activity centres for PE lessons.
How do I get a Fusion Card?
Pop into Outer West Pool, fill in a registration form and get your parent or guardian to sign it. You will then be issued with a free City leisure card. When you want to attend one of the advertised sessions, bring the card with you for free entry. For more information contact the Outer West Pool

Safer and St ronger Communities Fund, Neighbourhood Element (SSCFNE)
If you live in the SSCFNE area you should have received a newsletter through your letter box. This gives you all the latest news on what has happened so far and lets you know what is planned for the coming months. Please tell us what you think by filling in the sheet on the back of the newsletter and send it to the freepost address; your views are really important to us. We have recently reviewed the programme and the representatives are currently making decisions about how the money will be spent next year, based on your views. The Government's Safer and Stronger Communities Fund (SSCFNE) is targeted at the East Denton neighbourhood of the Denton Ward, Newbiggin Hall and part of Lemington. This means £1.6 million over 4 years. The project is now in to its second year. A group of local people decided the priorities for the SSCFNE area based on the Life in Denton research carried out last year. They meet every two months to develop solut ions and agree actions to address these priorities. Each area has two representatives, a deputy and a local councillor who get together to help make these decisions.
A number of projects have already been funded by SSCFNE in East Denton:
You may have noticed your new Neighbourhood Environmental Team, a dedicated team of two who not only keep the area clea n, but who are directed by local priorities. If you see them, chat to them, especially if you have a suggestion for environmental improvements.
- Watch out for a new play area inthe CD and E roads area. The Residents Association have been working hard to see this project come to life. SSCFNE have provided some fundin g to kickstart the project and U Decide has provided funding for equipment. The project is due to start in February.
A CCTV camera has been funded for t he area. This can be moved to different locations where it is most ne
eded.
The Denton Young People's Project (DYPP) has been funded to work in the ward. They are currently running a gardening project where young people volunteer to tidy the gardens of those that can’t manage garden maintenance themselves.
A mini motorbike campaign was funded from January – March 07 and again in the summer. This provided education and enforcement by additional Police at weekends.
Drugs 'n' Alcohol (DnA Project). This was funded up to April 2007, and parts of the work are continuing through other funding sources. T he project concentrated on education around drug, alcohol and sexual health issues.
A Co-ordinator, Helen Warneford, has been employed to work on SSCFNE to organise work involving residents to help develop solutions to the issues and to offer support to the community reps.
If you would like to know more about SSCFNE, or you would like to tell us about your priorities for the area, please get in touch with:
