Mental health services in Newcastle are provided by a partnership between Newcastle City Council, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust and the voluntary sector.
Community mental health teams
To get help from one of our specialist community mental health teams you will need to be referred by your doctor (GP), consultant psychiatrist, other mental health teams or social services.

Crisis Assessment and Home Treatment Service (CAT)
The CAT team provides crisis assessment and home treatment based services as an alternative to hospital admission. Services operate 24 hours, 7 days a week. To get help from the CAT team you need to be referred by your dcotor (GP) or a mental health professional.
Mental health resource centres
There are two community mental health resource centres in Newcastle. They provide recovery services plus crisis placements, planned respite and outreach support for adults who have experienced mental health problems.

Approved mental health professional (AMHP)
This service assesses people with mental health problems who may need admission to hospital under the Mental Health Act 1983.
The Approved Mental Health Professional (AMPH) is co-ordinated from the social work office at St Nicholas Hospital.

Adult acute psychiatric services
Acute psychiatric services provide in-patient and community care services for people with mental health problems. People using the services are mainly adults aged 18 to 65 years. A range of professionals work together to provide assessment, treatment and care planning services. These professionals include consultant psychiatrists, nurses, social care workers, occupational therapists and support staff.
Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)
CAMHS work with children and families from 0-19 years. The team includes community nurses, primary mental health workers, clinical psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, psychotherapists and child and adolescent psychiatrists. They provide assessment and intervention for a range of emotional and behavioural problems in children and young people and their families.
