Roads & highways - weight limits

Weight restrictions are imposed on roads for structural and environmental reasons.

Before restrictions are put in place a Traffic Regulation Order often known as a TRO must be processed.

Regulatory signs are put at the site to bring the TRO to the attention of the driver.
The signs also assist the police, it is their job to enforce the weight limits that are in place.

The restriction prevents large vehicles from using inappropriate roads, routes and areas and aim to:

  • reduce danger to pedestrians and other road users
  • prevent damage to buildings, roads and bridges
  • preserve the character, amenity and environment of an area
  • reduce and manage congestion on roads.
