Public art is used by the City Council to create and revitalise public spaces, to improve the environment and to enhance new developments. It is also an important and creative community development tool and is used to engage local people in shaping and defining their own communities and to enhance teaching in a range of subjects across the curriculum.

Newcastle has a wealth of public art. Some pieces, like Blue Carpet are well known, but others are not. Much of the work that the City Council does in the field of public art is intended to increase public awareness of the importance of good design; the value of a welcoming, distinctive environment; and the many examples of exemplary work that exist in the city.

The Public Art Guide is designed to encourage people to visit Newcastle's
Public Art on foot. Work is grouped into areas of the city. The guide gives the location and some background information for each work. It's aimed at locals wanting to discover more about their area, visitors to the region and people studying subjects related to Public Art.
