Quayside Weathervane - Public Art

Weathervane was an Art on the Riverside project inspired by the elements, artists worked with young people to create the work. Partnerships with local businesses led to the Weathervane trail along the Quayside.

Location - Within the Hotel
Materials - Waxed Mild Steel and Glass
Commissioned by - Art on the Riverside

The work is based on Napoleon and Josephine’s residency at Malmaison from which the hotel takes its name. The idea was developed with students at Kenton School. The sculpture is made up of intertwining crescent shapes as well as a sun and moons making reference to the influence of the tide.

Location - Quayside Walk at Copthorne Hotel
Materials - Glass and Aluminium
Commissioned by - Art on the Riverside

The artists worked with children from Chillingham Road Primary School and through this work arrived at the design in aluminium and anodised glass. The work hangs down from the canopy of the hotel.

Neptunes Chair - Helen Law & Effie Burns 1999Neptunes Chair by Helen Law & Effie Burns

Location - St Ann’s Wharf
Materials - Galvanised Steel
Commissioned by - Art on the Riverside

The artists were resident in Walker Comprehensive school where working with willow twigs, latex and sponge they worked with students to create a chair for Neptune. The artist then developed the design of the final piece directly from the students work. Access restricted to office hours.

Materials - Mild Steel
Commissioned by - Art on the Riverside

Working with Wingrove Junior School the artists produced a design which acts as a sign for Deas Mallen Souter solicitors. The work draws inspiration from the wind and bird life on the quay and river.

To Catch A Fish Alive - Northern Freeform 1999To Catch a Fish Alive by Northern Freeform

Location - Sandgate House Foyer
Materials - Copper Fish in a Glass Case
Commissioned by - Art on the Riverside

Working with 6th form pupils of St Marys RC Comprehensive School, artists Richard Broderick and Graham Robinson created the shoal of fish. The work was the second created in copper with the same set of students who’s brief was to design and create sea creatures using techniques learnt for shaping and joining the metal.
