Diving Lamps - Artscope
Shields Road Square Gable - Artscope
Location - Shields Road,Byker
Materials - Stainless steel and Perspex
Commissioned by - NCC
Three conical pillars split into four sections, the Diving Lamps are set on a flight of steps and reduce in size as they get nearer to the library to emphasize the perspective towards the library. Each lamp has a tubular top, which is shaped to represent a figure as if in the act of diving into the pool. The work has a shot blasted finish, which is covered with an anti graffiti coating to give a dark grey almost pewter like finish. At night blue light gleams from the slots in the lamps.

Several buildings were demolished creating a new gable end. In the process of demolition remains of Hadrian’s wall were discovered revealing the line of the wall running under the Gable. The design of the artwork takes elements of local history, from before the occupation by the Romans to the present. Also in the Square by Artscope are three decorative steel infill panels.
