"Mela" is a Sanskrit word meaning "gathering", which describes all sorts of community events and festivals.

The Newcastle Mela is the main annual event that Newcastle Asian Arts and Music (NAAM) organise in conjunction with Newcastle City Council which is held over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The Mela provides a range of diverse events and activities including food, fashion, stalls, sports and children activities.
