We are responsible for the maintenance of street lights and make sure new installations are designed to the correct standards.
Our responsibilities include:
- repairing street light faults (lights out)
- management and installation arrangements
- maintaining a register of street lights and illuminated signs
- designing and installing new and replacement installations
- testing and inspecting electrical and structural components to maintain safety.

Fault Procedures
- The lights are inspected during the night throughout the year. The faults are recorded and reported to allow the necessary repairs to be carried out.
- Faults reported by members of the public are also recorded and repairs are carried out.
- Faults are investigated within 5 working days of being reported and where possible repaired on the first visit. Over 90% are repaired on the first visit, others require more major repairs or involve electricity supply faults.
Types of Fault
Faults and damage to street lights and illuminated signs can be caused by any of the following;
component failure; if the light bulb has failed
electricity supply interruptions, for example loss of power due to underground cable faults
adverse weather conditions; if lightning strikes the equipment
vehicle impact from a road traffic accident; if a car hits the lamppost
vandalism; if someone causes deliberate damage to the lamppost.

Please include as much of the following information as possible:
- the identification number on the lamppost or sign
- the address and number of the adjacent property
- the nature of the fault or damage, for example the light is off or the door is missing from the lamppost.
Certain roads are not maintained by Newcastle City Council. These are the Trunk Roads A1M and A69. The management and maintenance is the responsibility of the Highways Agency.
