What is the Local List?
This is a list of buildings, structures, parks and gardens (including cemeteries and open spaces) that have special local architectural or historic interest which are an important part of your local heritage. They are different from Listed Buidings and Registered Parks and Gardens, such as the Theatre Royal, the Tyne Bridge, Jesmond Dene or Leazes Park, which are recognised as being of national importance (a list of buildings, structures, parks and gardens within Newcastle upon Tyne that are already on the national list or national register can be found by clicking here). Buildings and parks on the Local List may not be as important as those on the national list, but they are special to Newcastle.
Why do it? What does being on the List mean?
Unlike Listed Buildings or Registered Parks and Gardens, being included on the Local List does not provide any additional planning controls over those buildings or parks. However, it does recognise their importance and before any planning decisions are made their speical local architectural or historic interest will be taken into account.
What did the process involve?
In brief - All nominations were recorded and then considered by an independent panel of experts. The panel was chaired by Graham Bell, Director of the North of England Civic Trust, and a draft Local List produced. Owners of buildings and parks on the draft list were then consulted. Their representations were drawn together along with City Council responses into a Consultation Statement. All relevant documents were then to Planning and Transport Strategy Committee for decision.
The Consultation Statement which is available to download using the links above explains how we carried out the process in more detail.
