Newcastle Libraries – Holocaust Memorial Day Activities

To commemorate this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day, two of Newcastle Libraries Reading groups read books that are key to the central theme of the Holocaust, and other acts of hatred and repression through the years. In Kenton, the Chatterbooks group, for children aged 8 to 13 years read an illustrated book, the life of Anne Frank by Menno Metselaar, chronicling the life of the Jewish girl who hid from the Nazis, keeping a diary of her experiences.  The group also kept their own diaries in the run up to Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27th.

Both groups discussed the issues raised by the books they read and how they fitted into this year’s theme “Stand up to hatred”.  The groups explored issues such as how people, communities, and governments should act to combat hatred, and whether they themselves have experienced hatred, prejudice or discrimination in their life, and how this made them feel.

Below is the feedback from the Chatterbooks group for children aged 8 to 13 years

  • Which book did you read?

The Life of Anne Frank by Menno Metselaar
  • Have a read of the sentences below – did you see some or all of them happen in the book?

• Refuse to stand by and allow others to commit acts of hatred

• Recognise hateful words and actions, whatever they are.

• Stop using language which hurts others and stop others when we hear them doing the same.

• Learn from history about the results of ignoring or not reporting hatred, prejudice, discrimination and racism.

We did see some of them happening in the book. We saw people refusing to stand by and helping the people in hiding.

  • Do you agree that we should do something about hate?

    Yes, we all do.
  • What do you think you yourself could do?

We can report bullying to an adult.  Some of the group are school councillors.  We can report nasty words and racism and be friends with everyone.  Do not damage other people’s property.
  • Have you come across hatred in your life?

    Yes.
  • If so, how did this make you feel?  How did you deal with it?

Annoyed, sad, isolated, sorry, lonely, and angry.  We deal with it by trying to talk to people who have hurt my feelings and if they don’t stop it and tell an adult.
