Local information about Woolsington

Woolsington Ward covers a large geographical area, from Newbiggin Hall to Woolsington Village. In the ward, tenants of Your Homes Newcastle have access to Newbiggin Hall Housing Office. Parts of the ward are serviced by Blakelaw Housing Office and West Denton Customer Service Centre. These offices provide and support a variety of functions including the collection of rents and other payments and the reporting and monitoring of repairs. The Neighbourhood Wardens are based in the housing offices and the Rapid Response Team work closely with this service.

As well as services and facilities available within the ward, the neighbouring Westerhope, Castle and Blakelaw wards offer additional services including Kingston Park Shopping Centre. Newcastle Airport is to the North of Woolsington Ward.

Woolsington Ward has four primary schools, as well as a nursery and registered crèche managed by NCH (National Children’s Homes). The schools are; Simonside Community Primary, Farne Primary, Cheviot Primary and St Mark’s RC Primary. Chevyside Learning First (beside Cheviot Primary School) offers a wide range of services and activities to the community and is a citywide facility. Surestart Childrens Centre Newbiggin Hall is based at Gala Field and offers a number of services to children aged 0-4 years and their parents.

Newbiggin Hall Library has computers with free internet access, an early years library book section, music CD’s and photocopying facilities.

Gala Field Youth Centre provides activities and support to children and young people in the area.

Simonside Community Centre on Bedeburn Road offers a wide range of community activities, rooms to hire for events or meetings and a fitness suite.

Leisure facilities are also accessible in the nearby Denton and Kenton wards. The recently refurbished Outer West Pool (formerly Denton Park Pool) offers swimming facilities and a fitness room as well as the services available at the Outer West Customer Services Centre.

The Woolsington ward boundary starts at the junction with the A1 and A696 Woolsington Bypass. It heads northwest along the A696 to the junction with Newbiggin Dene where it heads north to the metro line. From here the boundary runs along the Westerhope ward boundary to join Stamfordham Road at the junction of the Ouseburn. The boundary continues southeast along Stamfordham Road to the junction with the A1 Western Bypass. It heads north along the A1 back to the start at the Woolsington Bypass.
