Local information about Walkergate

Walkergate is located in the far east of the city.  Community facilities include Church Walk Housing Office for estate management and rent enquiries.  Walker Library on Welbeck Road which, although also in the neighbouring Walker ward, is close by and offers a number of community learning facilities and services to residents of both wards. 

The ward contains a number of schools including Benfield School/Sports College catering for students aged 11-18. The sports college extends links between schools, sports bodies and communities by sharing resources and developing good practice, helping to provide a structure through which young people can progress to careers in sport and PE. Walkergate also has a secondary school, Walker Technology College on Middle Street.

There are two primary schools, St Alban’s RC on Westbourne Avenue and Walkergate Primary on Sutton Street. Walkergate Early Years Nursery provides pre-school education. Incorporated within this is Millers Dene Family Centre which offers a range of support functions. Sir Charles Parsons School is a special school which caters for pupils aged 11-19 with learning difficulties.

Walkergate has a number of green spaces including Waverdale East and Waverdale West, which are separated by Waverdale Road; the Fossway Recreation Ground and Miller’s Dene.

The ward has good transport links including Walkergate Metro station for access to the coast and the city centre.

The boundary commences from the most easterly point and follows the existing ward boundary round to Benfield Road. It travels north to the midway point of Benton Way then bears south west, parallel to Neptune Road, to the west of Oil Mill Road. It then heads north past Maurice Road Industrial Estate  to Philphaugh, to the Avenue and then High Street West. The boundary bears west along Shields Road and then heads north at 1,048 Shields Road, through Rheydale Avenue, then south along Alderwood Crescent to the end of Logan Road. It then runs west to the Burn, north past the playing fields, past the football ground and Bowling Green, and past the playground around to Benfield Road. It turns south down Benfield Road then east along the perimeter of Walkergate hospital back to Benfield Road. It then travels south down Benfield Road, crossing the metro line to Shields Road and turns southwest down Shields Road, then south down Valentia Avenue to Fossway. The boundary travels east along the Fossway to just beyond the roundabout at the junction of Whinneyfield Road before turning south down the back of Whinneyfield Road, across the gardens/ allotments to Langley Road and west along Middle Street. It heads south down Scrogg Road and continues east along Welbeck Road to the River Tyne before finally following the River Tyne north up to the beginning of Benton Way.
