Local information about East Gosforth

East Gosforth has four schools - Gosforth Middle School, Archbishop First School, South Gosforth First School and Newcastle Preparatory School for boys (formally know as Newlands School). There are two churches, St Charles R.C Church and St Nicholas Parish Church. These are focal point for community delivery.

The ward has two parks, Gosforth Central Park which won the Green Flag award in November 2004 and the Quarry Park. Gosforth Central Park was created in 1932 and is located in the west of the ward. The south east ward boundary includes two large green areas, Jesmond Dene and Paddy Freeman's Park which is located in the Dene ward. The facilities include a bowling green and a pavillion that has an open membership for both men and women.

The ward also has six smaller green spaces; Cheswick Drive, Christon Road/Rydal Road field, Lodore Road/Valley Green, South Gosforth Green, St James Street and Little Moor/Little Dene. It is hoped that coupled with the redevelopment of Trinity Square, the High Street will recreate a ‘village square’ character. The ward has a very active community sector with four Residents Associations; Gosforth Residents Association, Garden Village Residents Association, South Gosforth Residents Association and High West Jesmond Residents Association. East Gosforth also benefits from seven Allotments Associations and various clubs.

Recommendations made by the Electoral Committee’s Boundary Review in June 2004 resulted in East Gosforth being established as a new ward by dividing the previous South Gosforth ward in half and taking in a small section of the southern part of the previous Grange ward.

The boundary starts at the Blue House roundabout. It continues by heading east along Jesmond Dene Road to the Ouseburn and then north along the Ouseburn to Haddricksmill Bridge. The boundary continues north to the rear of the properties on Ridgewood Crescent and across the Metro line to continue north along the course of the Ouseburn. At the footbridge across the Ouseburn, it heads west around the perimeter of Gosforth Golf Course and continues west along Links Green Walk. It then leads west to the Asda Superstore on the Great North Road. The ward boundary continues south on Great North Road/Gosforth High Street along to the Blue House roundabout, where it ends.
