There are six schools located in the ward - All Saints College, Beech Hill Primary, West Denton Primary, St John Vianney RC Primary, Thomas Bewick Special School, and the Linhope Pupil Referral Unit. There is carer and toddler, playgroup and nursery provision at various venues throughout the ward.
There are two main housing neighbourhoods in the ward. Chapel House is a large private estate to the west of Hillhead Road. West Denton is the area to the east of Hillhead Road and on either side of West Denton Way, and comprises a mixture of local authority, privately owned, private rented, and housing association housing. There are two high rise blocks of flats in the ward, at Denton Park Shopping Centre (Denton Park House) and next to the industrial estate in the far east of the Ward (Hilltop House). There is one residential home (Comfort House) and one Anchor retirement housing scheme (Lincrest Court).
The main shopping area in the ward is the West Denton Shopping Centre on West Denton Way, though residents in Chapel House and the Burnside area have access to shops in their immediate local areas. Plans are underway for the redevelopment of the West Denton Shopping Centre. This will complement the services offered at the Outer West Customer Service Centre, Outer West Library, and Outer West Pool, which are adjacent to the proposed new development, and links well to the proposed development of All Saints College. The school will form part of an Extended School facility in partnership with the other schools within the ward, which will offer access to a range of activities and support to children and young people of primary and secondary school age, their parents and carers and the wider community. This will also complement the development of a locality based Children’s Centre within the Denton and Westerhope wards, which will offer a range of services and support to children from birth to five years of age and their parents or carers.
Denton ward benefits from many green and open spaces including those at All Saints College, West Denton Association, Barbondale Lonnen, Talbot Green, and Westerhope Park, plus other small pockets of public open space. Sports facilities are available for use at All Saints College, West Denton Association and Westerhope Park and some schools in the area open up their playing fields for the use of the local community. There are a number of small play areas in the ward and an allotment site at Longstone Square.
The ward has a very active community sector with many long-established and thriving community groups and experienced volunteers. Two Community Associations (West Denton Association and Denton Park Community Association) serve the ward and offer a wide range of activities for the local community. The Denton Community Partnership is the umbrella organisation that seeks to represent the views and aspirations of local communities via their community representatives.
The boundary of the Denton ward starts at the A1/Stamfordham Road roundabout and heads northwest along Stamfordham Road. It heads south along Glantlees, turns west along the rear of Fairspring and moves north excluding the Greenfield Avenue properties. The boundary heads westerly along West Avenue to the junction with Rogerson Terrace. It then turns south and runs along the cycle track to All Saints College. From All Saints, the boundary follows the playing fields to Hillhead Road to the junction with Hillhead Parkway. It incorporates land to the south of Hillhead Parkway. The boundary then heads west to the rear of the church and on to the rear of Frenton Close. It follows the rear of the properties on Clifton Walk until reaching North Walbottle wagonway. It then follows the wagonway south incorporating the Walbottle Year 7 Annexe until reaching the A69 where it heads east until reaching the A1 Western By-pass. From here the boundary heads along the A1 back to the Stamfordham Road roundabout.
