The ward has two nursery schools: Atkinson Road and Valley View. It has six  primary schools: Delaval Community, South Benwell, St. Bede's RC, St. Joseph's RC, Atkinson Road and Broadwood Primary. St. Cuthbert's Catholic High (Upper and Lower) is also within the ward as is Hadrian School which supports pupils with special educational needs.

Both Benwell Library and the nearby Denton Burn Library offer computers with free access to the internet, a children’s library, music cd's and black and white photocopying facilities. Benwell Library is a community building which is used for a number of local groups and classes. The library has a multi cultural collection of resources including books, magazines and newspapers. The Libraries also provide a base for Councillors' surgeries.

The ward is home to Benwell Nature Park and Denton Dene South. The Benwell Nature Park, off Atkinson Road, has a visitor’s centre and runs a wide range of activities and events throughout the year.

Scotswood Leisure Centre, on Denton Road, hosts sports clubs and provides a range of fitness classes.

The boundary of the Benwell and Scotswood ward starts at the West Road/A1 roundabout and heads south along the A1 to the River Tyne. It continues east to the Scotswood Road and William Armstrong Drive junction. Heading north the boundary joins Buddle Road and continues along St Johns Road to Elswick Road. The boundary then heads west onto Adelaide Terrace to the Hodgkin Park Road junction. It continues north to the rear of the allotment gardens and Lismore Place properties. It moves to the west behind Denhill Park properties to Pendower Hall School and follows the school's eastern perimeter north to the West Road to the A1.
