History
Hodgkin Park was donated to the City Council by Thomas Hodgkin, a prominent local Banker in 1899, "For the benefit and recreation of local people". Originally the grounds to his house, the park is some 11 acres in size and originally had bowling greens, bandstands and ponds to complement its substantial tree cover. The
park is in two parts, dissected by Armstrong Road The two parts of the park are different in character. This is partly due to the fact that they are severed by Armstrong road. Hodgkin Park north is smaller and more secluded and enclosed. It seems a quieter area in general. The southern park is more open. The two parts are visually connected by the mature trees in the Dene.
As heavy industry declined along the banks of the Tyne, Benwell suffered the symptoms which have affected many Inner City areas in the U.K.
