The Newcastle Football Development Scheme was launched on 27th March
1987 at the Lightfoot Centre in Walker. Sir Bobby Robson performed the opening ceremony supported by a number of players from Newcastle United F.C. including Peter Beardsley and a teenager called Paul Gascoigne. The objective of the scheme which was set up by a partnership of various interest groups including the City of Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle United F.C. and Northumberland F.A. has always been to increase the range of footballing opportunities available to people in the area. The sustained success of the operation is shown by the fact that over 10,000 children and adults take part in the programme each year.
The philosophy of the Newcastle Football Development Scheme is summed up in the following sentence:
"Coaching is all about helping players to become Better Players and Better People"
Many of our young players have moved on from our programme into the professional game but it is just as important to us that many of our former players have become Coaches with the Scheme and will hopefully be involved with football for life.
