We manage and maintain 38,000 street lights and 4,000 illuminated traffic signs.
Types of Lighting
There are four main types of light source.
High Pressure Sodium Lamps (SON)
These lamps are predominately used on main roads where a more natural colour is required. Note that some of the new types of high pressure sodium lamps produce white light and are subsequently being used in residential ares instead of low pressure sodium lamps.
Low Pressure Sodium Lamps (SOX)
The majority of lamps are of this type. They are predominately used in residential areas as they are the most efficient type of lamp in converting electricity to light and produce the familiar orange colour. As part of the PFI Contract we are replacing SOX lamps with SON lamps.
Compact Metal Halide
This lamp produces a white light giving good colour rendering and is predominately used in City Centres.
Compact Fluorescent Lamps
These lamps are used to illuminate traffic signs and some of the higher wattage versions are now being used for the lighting of footpaths and back lanes. These lamps produce white light.
