Environmental Services

Environmental Services is a fundamental component of the Neighbourhood Services Division.  Its primary role is to ensure the delivery of modern, streamlined and cohesive services designed to create a cleaner, greener, safer and attractive streets and open spaces in accordance within the Council's overall ambition for its environment.

Environmental Services has 5 keys areas of responsibility.

Citywide Services

Currently not all services are best delivered at a local level due to economies of scale and the time available for change.  Localised services work alongside a range of Citywide services.  Integration of these services with localised activities is, therefore, essential as is therefore a first class working relationship.

The following services are delivered on a Citywide basis.

  • Refuse Collection
  • Commercial Refuse
  • Grounds Maintenance
  • Winter Maintenance
  • Arboriculture
  • Landscape Construction
  • Nursery
  • Technical Support

Localised Services

These involve all front line environmental services delivered on a ward or area basis.  The Neighbourhood response teams include the former worker groups of Street Cleansing, Rapid Response, Gully Maintenance, Graffiti, Abandoned Vehicles, Mechanised Cleaning. Back Lane Clearance and Wardens Service.

City Centre Environmental Services

Environmental Services have introduced a dedicated City Centre team, responsible for Street Cleansing, Graffiti Removal and Grounds Maintenance within the City Centre.   This team also plays a key role in ensuring appropriate relationships exist with our City Centre Partners.  Another key role is to ensure that City Centre development is environmentally sustainable and to ensure a joined up service provision with the commercial sector.

Sustainability Unit

Responsible for Waste and Energy Management, Environmental Educational Awareness, Environmental Management Systems and Green Space Strategy Implementation.

Bereavement Services

Responsible for the management of the City's Cemeteries and West Road Crematorium.

The objective of this service area is to provide an efficient and caring service for the disposal of the dead, ensuring the needs and expectations of the bereaved are fully met, in line with the Charter for the Bereaved.  Also, to ensure that the cemeteries are managed and maintained in a safe condition.
