Eco Management and Audit Scheme Roads and Highways

Achievements so far...

EMAS has helped Technical Services achieve many environmental performance improvements in the last five years, including:

  • Highways and Traffic Signals now recycle 97% of their construction waste (including concrete, tarmac and excavation waste).
  • Engineering Consultancy and Street Management are trialling various new 'environmentally friendly' technologies in the city including solar powered traffic signs.
  • Highways and Traffic Signals now repair tarmac roads and footways using a unique process called 'Rhinopatch', which recycles 100% of the material on site instead of using new road materials.
  • Engineering Consultancy and Street Management now employ the services of a qualified Ecologist for any of their schemes where an impact on the natural environment is predicted.
  • Highways and Traffic Signals have purchased a mini concrete crusher, which enables them to recycle all of their concrete waste generated from highway maintenance (broken kerbs and paving slabs) and reuse the crushed concrete for highway sub-base.

Environmental Best Practice - Case Study

Design Engineer holding a Green AppleThe Scotswood Road Highway Improvements Scheme, in the west of the city, picked up an international award for its 'environmentally-friendly' design and construction. The prestigious Green Apple Award, keenly fought over with over 10000 entries from around the world every year, is the highest award of the Green Organisation.

The award was given due to the high levels of construction waste recycling, the wildlife protection measures (during construction) and the planned wildlife habitat improvements (post-construction). The award was presented to Paul Young (Design Engineer) and Mick Murphy (General Manager) at the Houses of Commons.
