Eldon Square Development

Eldon Square Shopping Centre redevelopment

The phased redeveloment of Eldon Square Shopping Centre is now underway. The Council and our partners Capital Shopping Centres commenced work on the first phase in May 2005. Details of the development timetable is outlined below:

Autumn 2006

Eldon Square West shops and restaurants open. Commencement of bus station. New John Lewis Brasserie opens

March 2007

New bus station opens. Construction of Eldon Square North (retail) starts.   February 2007 temporary Greenmarket relocated to High Friars.

Summer 2007           

Eldon Square South starts.                   

Early 2008

Eldon Square North opens

Spring 2010

Eldon Square South opens

ES North Scheme comprises of the construction of a new bus station on Prudhoe Street, removal of the existing bus station and replacement with retail units, creation of a new pedestrian link to the North of Eldon Square.

ES West Scheme is the redevelopment of retail units on the east side of Blackettbridge and new restaurant space at ground level fronting Old Eldon Square.

ES South Scheme incorporates the demolition and redevelopment of the southern end of the Centre to provide a new retail scheme anchored by a department store. A new Greenmarket is included in the scheme. A Compulsory Purchase Order will be required to ensure that the Council is able to acquire all of the legal interests in the site which are needed for the delivery of Scheme 3.

The latest retailers announced are Debenhams, Wagamamas, Strada, Jack & Jones, Holland & Barrett and Carphone Warehouse.
