City Technology Office

In order to address the needs of the wider Knowledge Economy in the City-Region, Newcastle City Council created the City Technology Office in 2005

The City Technology Office aims to:

  • support the strategic and operational development of the Science and Enterprise strand of the Science City programme
  • stimulate growth, innovation and the attraction of talent in the city region
  • stimulate technology transfer and commercialisation
  • stimulate the generation of commercial intellectual property in the public and private sectors
  • stimulate effective international networks between the North East, Europe and the Global marketplace
  • stimulate the development of key growth sectors in the city-region


The City Technology Office team works with the key stakeholders of the knowledge economy:

  • Start-ups/Entrepreneurs
  • Small and Medium Size Enterprises
  • Industry
  • Universities
  • European Commission
  • Business Support Organisations


The City Technology Office delivers services that meet the needs of high-growth start-ups and SMEs with a technology development requirement in the city-region. These projects are detailed in the following pages:

In 2005 the City Technology Office had the following impacts as specified in its Annual Report 2005/06 (pdf, 880Kb)

  • 800+ businesses and projects advised on innovation options available to them
  • 210 businesses implemented  technology related business process improvements
  • 69 management teams improved their skill levels
  • 30 businesses accessed partnership opportunities in international markets
  • Partnerships are in place to support 20 post-doctorate business plans and to develop 10 high growth health care / science entrepreneurs
  • Revised £1.74 million of external public funding and £0.2 million of private sector funding to invest in business support
