Preparation of 'new' Core Strategy
Following the withdrawal of the original draft Core Strategy (see below) the Council is preparing proposals for a new (and much improved) Core Strategy. These will be incoporated within a draft revised LDF Local Development Scheme. We hope to take a paving report on the shape of the new Core Stratgy to Executive on 22 April 2009 - see this page for the report when ready (about a week beforehand).
It is likely that the new Core Strategy will include the allocation of strategic sites and possibly development control policies. There will also be a completely revised and updated evidence base. Many aspects of Core Strategy work will be done jointly or in close cooperation with Gateshead Council.
The preparation of the new Core Strategy will have to start again from the beginning of the statutory process as set out in legislation and regulations. However changes made in procedures in summer 2008 mean that there is more flexibility in how community and stakeholder engagement is undertaken, especially in the early stages.
Please watch this space for more detail as it emerges.
Withdrawn - 17 December 2008

Cancellation of Examination - 3 November 2008
In the light of the statement by the Inspector at the Exploratory Meeting (see next section), the Council decided to seek withdrawal of its Core Strategy. This had to be done via the Government Office for the North East (GONE) and the Secretary of State.
A letter was sent to GONE on 30 October setting this in motion. A letter was also sent to the Planning Inspector informing him of our decision. A letter was received back from GONE on 31 October confirming that a direction to withdraw had been made. The Inspector decided on 3 November to cancel the Examination and wrote to the Council accordingly.
