There will be two opportunities to ring in the New Year this year as Newcastle City Council has announced a double celebration for Tuesday 31 December.

Newcastle’s New Year’s Eve family fireworks, which has become a tradition for many, will again be taking place outside the Civic Centre from 6pm. Everyone is urged to get along to enjoy Metro Radio’s entertainment from 5pm and secure a good vantage point to see the display.

And if you’re out celebrating later on, head down to Newcastle’s Quayside to enjoy the midnight fireworks against the magnificent backdrop of our iconic bridges. This event is run in conjunction with NE1, Newcastle’s Business Improvement District and has been made possible with financial contributions from local businesses.

Cllr Ged Bell, Cabinet member for Employment and Culture said: “This year Christmas in Newcastle has been the best one yet, and I’m delighted this is continuing into the New Year, with two firework displays on New Year’s Eve, offering something for everyone.

“We know families love coming into the city centre for the early evening display and are delighted that many of the Christmas market stalls will still be open this year. So, if you are coming into town for this, come along early, grab something to eat and enjoy the entertainment from Metro Radio.

“And with the support of local businesses and NE1 we are also bringing back the midnight fireworks for another year, so I would like to thank everyone who has made this possible.

“It should be a fantastic evening.”

If you’re heading into town for Newcastle’s New Year’s Eve fireworks it is advised that you use public transport. To plan your journey visit Nexus’ website.

There will be road closures in place around the Civic Centre from 4pm until about 9pm. Parts of Sandyford Road, College Street and John Dobson Street will be closed along with the whole of Barras Bridge and St Mary’s Place. Keep an eye on the council’s website and social media channels for full details.

The Quayside will close between the Tyne Bridge and Milk Market between 11.45pm and 12.15am.
