Everyone has a responsibility to safeguard vulnerable adults.

In Newcastle we work together with other agencies to protect the lives of vulnerable adults.

Stop adult abuse

Abuse is never ok. If you or someone you know is being abused, it is important to tell someone. Please do this by talking to Adult Social Care using the contact details listed below:

In an emergency always dial 999

Adult Social Care Direct (8 am - 6 pm) - 0191 278 8377

Outside of these hours call - 0191 232 8520

You might need to complete a Safeguarding Adults Multi-agency Alert Form (SAMA1) (Word, 85 kb)

Adult Social Care will guide you through this process.

Preventing adult abuse is everyone's responsibility and anybody can raise an alert.

What will happen next?

Your contact with us will be treated as an 'alert'. Our response will depend on the wishes and circumstances of the person who is being abused and the seriousness of the situation. If they are in any danger, our primary concern will be to ensure their safety.

In response to your alert, our trained staff will carry out a careful and sensitive enquiry. We will work together with all of the relevant organisations and provide information and advice to ensure informed choice about how best to protect and care for the abused person. There may be a need for further action or investigation in order to protect the vulnerable adult from abuse.

You can find a list of further helpful contact numbers by clicking here.

If you are concerned that a child is being abused you should contact the Children's Social Care Initial Response Service by telephoning 0191 277 2500 or by clicking here.

Newcastle Safeguarding Adults Board Threshold Tool

In partnership with the North East Association of Directors of Adult Social Services and our colleagues from across the region we have introduced a Threshold Guidance Tool. The purpose of the tool is to introduce a set standard for identifying and progressing safeguarding adults alerts across the region. It is hoped that the introduction of the tool will provide consistency and allow agencies a framework to manage risk. To find out more information you can download copies of the Threshold Tool (pdf, 101 kb).

Safeguarding Adults training for Trustees / Management Committees

The Newcastle Safeguarding Adults Board in conjunction with the Newcastle Council for Voluntary service are holding some training sessions for trustees or management committee members of charities or community and voluntary organisations. The sessions aim to increase awareness of safeguarding adults and the role of Trustees or Management Committee members in the safeguarding adults procedures. The training will also provide practical advice and guidance to support organisations with safeguarding adults. You can find out more by visiting our Training for Trustees and Management Committee members webpage.

Safeguarding Adults Guides

Newcastle Safeguarding Adults Board have written a series of guides to help explain safeguarding adults. These guides will help people understand what happens when someone is worried about a vulnerable adult being abused. You can download copies of the guides and find out how to use them to support a vulnerable adult and/or their representative.
