Hide details for Refugee WeekRefugee Week

Refugee week takes place once a year. It is always celebrated in June in order to coincide with the annual World Refugee Day (20th June). Refugee week provides a unique opportunity to celebrate the positive contributions that refugees and asylum seekers make to the UK, and to try and promote understanding about why people seek sanctuary.

During Refugee Week, hundreds of events take place across the UK, organised by charities, local government, refugee community organisations, schools, arts organisations and lots more. These events can be large or small include arts events such as concerts, exhibitions and festivals; sporting activities; events in schools; local community events and seminars and discussions around key issues.

Over past years we have organised very successful refugee week events. In 2001 and 2002 we held fun day events at Lightfoot Sports Centre. We called these events 'One World in One Room' and had a variety of activities including bouncy castles, face painting, head massage, music, Irish dancing, trampolining, football, information stalls and international cuisine.

In 2003 we took 200 asylum seekers, refugees and members of the local community to Beamish Museum. Everyone had a great time and learnt a lot about local history.

In 2004 and 2005 we organised highly successful events at Alnwick Garden and Castle. The children particularly enjoyed playing in the water fountain and everyone loved the castle and the garden.
